BSc Nautical Science is a 3-year graduation program that you can opt for if you want to become a sailor in the Merchant Navy. This course will give you the post of Deck Cadet onboard after which you can become an officer in Merchant Navy. The Deck Officer on a ship is responsible for navigation, communication, and loading and discharging of cargo.

There are two ways through which you can join the Deck Department in the Merchant Navy i.e. Diploma in Nautical Science and BSc Nautical Science. However, both have their own set of advantages and demerits. So, let’s check why BSc Nautical Science might be a better option for you.

The minimum eligibility criteria for the BSc in Nautical Science course set by DG Shipping is as given below. Many colleges have additional eligibility criteria and selection procedures apart from the standards set by DG Shipping.

There are a lot of colleges that conduct BSc Nautical Science courses for the Merchant Navy. However, there are only a few that truly have a good placement record in India. Let’s discuss them one by one:-Â
Educational Qualifications | Qualifying in IMU CET, as well as TMISAT, is mandatory for admission. Marks in PCM should be at least 60% with at least 50% marks in English either in 10th or 12th. |
Age | The age of the candidate should not be more than 21 years. |
Medical Criteria | Candidates must be medically fit including eyesight and hearing as prescribed in the Merchant Shipping. Vision should be (6/12) in each eye (6/9) in the better eye and (6/18) in another eye. Color blindness is not allowed |
Educational Qualification | Pass in the 12th Standard examination with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and English as separate subjects with a PCM average of not less than 60%. The candidate must have secured a minimum of 50% marks in the English language in the 10th or 12th standard exam |
Age | The age limit for AMET is from 17 to 25 years old with a relaxation of 5 years for SC/ST Caste and 2 years of extra relaxation for female candidates. |
Medical Criteria | The Candidate should be physically fit with eye-sight up to 6/6 in the better eye and 6/9 in the other eye. |
Educational Qualifications | Candidate must have passed class 12th PCM with at least 60% with more than 50% in English either in 10th or 12th. |
Age | The age limit to apply for a BSc Nautical Science in T.S. Chanakya is 17 to 25. |
Medical Criteria | The Candidate should be physically fit for sea with eye-sight up to 6/6 in the better eye and 6/9 in the other eye. |
BSc in Nautical Science is a 3-year pre-sea course.
 It varies from college to college, for instance, TS Chanakya charges 6.6 lakhs whereas TMI charges 18 lakhs for the three-year BSc course.
10+2/equivalent (PCM – a minimum of 60% aggregate) & minimum of 50% in English. The candidate should have obtained not less than 50% marks in English as a separate subject, at either 10th or 12th standard.
The admission procedure for BSc in Nautical Science is divided into three stages:-
The top BSc Nautical Science colleges in India, as of now, are TMI (Tolani Maritime Institute), TS Chanakya, and AMET with Mearsk Sponsorship.
As a BSc in Nautical passout students don’t have to go through the foundation course which means they have to complete their 12 months onboard after BSc in Nautical Science to appear for the 2nd Mate CoC.
