How Can Girls Join Merchant Navy

Merchant navy since its very inception has been a male-dominated industry. Even today the shipping industry is mostly run by men who hold major positions in some of the biggest shipping companies and organizations. However, in the last few years, many shipping companies have taken the initiative to recruit girls and balance this disproportionate gender ratio in this industry.  

Courses for Girls to join Merchant Navy

There are many different courses through which you can join the deck or engine department in merchant navy. Below we have given a list of all the courses that are recommended in case you want to join the deck or engine department in merchant navy.                                                     

Courses for Girls To Join The Deck Side in Merchant Navy

In our country, there are two courses available for girls to join the deck department in Merchant navy. They are –

Diploma in Nautical Science 

This is a 1 year pre-sea course upon successful completion of which you will be placed onboard ships as deck cadets. You need to complete a minimum sea time of 18 months after which you will be eligible to appear for the 2nd mate’s Certificate of Competency (CoC) exam. 

  • Diploma in Nautical Science Eligibility 
AGE Minimum age: 17years
Maximum age: General-27 years, OBC(NCL)-30 years, SC/ST-32 years
Educational qualifications At the 10+2 level, A minimum of 60% in aggregate ( min 70% in AEMA and 65% aggregate) in PCM subjects is necessary to apply for a DNS course.

B.Sc. in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, or Electronics with Physics as an individual subject in one of the years, with an average of not less than 55%of the marks in the final year.
[OR]
B.E./B.Tech Degree from IIT or a college recognized by AICTE with an average of not less than 50% of the marks in the final year.
Relaxation
for SC/ST
candidates
There will be a 5% relaxation in eligibility marks of PCM-Average; however, it will not apply to English Marks.
A relaxation of 5% in English marks will apply to candidates who are natives of the Lakshadweep and Andaman & Nicobar Islands and belong to their Scheduled Tribes and who & both of whose parents were born in those islands & belong to the Scheduled Tribes of that island.
English Candidate should have obtained not less than 50% marks in English as a separate subject, at either 10th or 12th standard or in the Degree course conducted by a recognized Board/University.
No relaxation for SC/ST candidates in English.
Physical fitness and Medical Criteria Candidates should be physically fit with 6/6 eyesight without visual aids and no color blindness or night blindness, as specified by DG Shipping.

BSc in Nautical Science 

This is a 3 years degree course upon successful completion of which you will obtain the BSc in Nautical Science degree. After this course, you will join a ship as a deck cadet. However, unlike Diploma in Nautical Science in this course, you need to complete a minimum sea time of only 12 months. 

  • BSc in Nautical Science Eligibility

The minimum eligibility criteria for BSc in Nautical Science course set by DG Shipping is as given below. Many colleges have additional eligibility criteria and selection procedures apart from the standards set by DG Shipping.

AgeMinimum age: 17years
Maximum age: General-27 years, OBC(NCL)-30 years, SC/ST-32 years
The reference date for the calculation of the age will be from the date of commencement of the Academic Session.
Educational qualifications10+2/equivalent (PCM – a minimum of 60% aggregate).
EnglishThe candidate should have obtained not less than 50% marks in English as a separate subject, at either 10th [OR] 12th standard.

Courses For Girls To Join The Engine Side in Merchant Navy

Mostly girls prefer to join the deck side rather than the engine side. The job profile of deck officers is more of like a “white collared” job. On the other hand in the engine side, they have to work in the hot engine rooms working on machinery with their bare hands and tools. However, there are plenty of options available for girls to join the engine department and become marine engineers. 

Btech Marine Engineering

Btech Marine Engineering is a 4-year degree course in the stream of Engineering which prepares its students for a career in Marine Engineering. A bachelor’s degree in Btech Marine Engineering acts as an entry point for interested students to join the merchant navy through the engine side.          

  • Btech Marine Engineering Eligibility 
AgeMinimum age: 17 years
Maximum age: General-27 years, OBC (NCL) – 30 years, SC/ST-32 years.
Educational QualificationCandidates who have completed their 10+2 education in the science stream from a recognized Board where they have studied Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics compulsorily and have secured a minimum overall aggregate of 60% are eligible.

Candidates who have a 3-year diploma with 60% marks are also eligible through a lateral entry scheme.
English ProficiencyA minimum score of 50% in the 10th [OR] 12th examination in the subject of English is compulsory.
Medical AssessmentPhysically fit and should meet the medical requirements as specified Director General of Shipping, eyesight 6/12 in each eye without visual aids, and no color blindness.

Graduate Marine Engineering 

Graduate Marine Engineering is a postgraduate diploma course for a duration of one year to enable cadets to join the merchant navy. All colleges are headed and administered by the Director General of Shipping, a government body.

The graduates of this course go on to become marine engineers. They start by working on merchant ships as a junior engineer. After the completion of 6 months of sea time training, they become eligible for the class IV MEO examination. Upon successfully passing this examination they receive a Certificate of Competency (CoC) from the Mercantile Marine department of the Government of India and are promoted to fourth engineer. Graduate Marine Engineering courses are usually joined by those who have a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or naval architecture. 

Graduate Marine Engineering Eligibility

The fundamental admission policies are given by the Director General of Shipping upon which maritime institutes can set their criteria for admission of GME aspirants. The following set of points will sum up the admission criteria of most of the GME colleges-

Age restrictionThe age of the Candidate must not be more than 28 years on the day of the start of training.
Educational QualificationCandidates must have a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical engineering or Naval Architecture with a minimum score of 50% in aggregate.
English Proficiency A minimum score of 50% in the subject of English in their 10th [OR] 12th examination is compulsory to get admitted to a GME college. 
Medical assessmentA minimum of 6/12 vision and perfect hearing is necessary without any defects such as night blindness and color blindness. Medical parameters for selection are set by the Director General of Shipping. 

Electro technical officer 

As per Section A-III/6 of the STCW Code Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) is a licensed member of the engine department on board. For the efficient functioning of every electronic element on merchant navy vessels, an ETO is responsible. Electronic elements range from huge and complex engine room control systems to electronic charts and radars installed on the bridge. ETO is responsible for the generation of power and distribution systems for other systems such as lifts, reefers, and much more. ETO’s working range depends upon the type of vessel, they can also be witnessed indulged in cargo operations.

Electro-technical officer eligibility 

The minimum academic qualification to become an ETO is –

Age LimitFor general category candidates, the maximum age is 37 years as of the commencement of the course. For Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe candidates, the maximum age relaxation of 5 years is applicable, and a maximum of 3 years relaxation applies to OBC (NCL) candidates as per the directives of the Government of India.
Course DurationFor achieving the certificate as an Electro-Technical Officer (ETO), pre-sea Training for ETO on merchant ships of a duration of 17 weeks is mandatory along with 8 months of onboard training.
Education Qualification1) Passed in 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and English with a minimum of 50% marks in class 10th [OR] 12th in the English Language in standard exams.
2) After passing three years Diploma with 60% marks or four year Degree including lateral entry, with 50% marks in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, or Electronics and Instrumentation Electronics and Telecommunication, Communication Engineering, or equivalent courses.
3) Candidates who were admitted in the Diploma course based on the Matriculation only and went to complete their B.E./ B. Tech degree course as a lateral entry in the 2nd year of the degree based on the Diploma, and have secured the degree in the disciplines mentioned at (II) of the above, are also permitted to be admitted in the ETO course.
4) Diploma in (EE/ ECE/ EEE/EIE) with 60% or B-Tech in (EE/ ECE/ EEE/EIE) with 55%. The diploma or the degree courses should be recognized by any State or Central Government or the AICTE.
Medical StandardsAs per existing MS Medical Rules 2000/MLC 2006 applicable to seafarers, a candidate must have good health and be fit for sea service. SCI empaneled DG-approved Doctors to do the medical fitness checks.

Girls can pursue the above-mentioned courses to join the merchant navy as an officer and pursue a successful career at sea. Today, some of the biggest shopping companies and the maritime governing bodies of many countries are actively encouraging the inclusion of women in the maritime field. Which has opened many new opportunities for young girls aspiring to join this profession.
