1. Merchant Navy Courses After 12th

To join the Merchant Navy, there are 4 courses that you can go for after 12th to join the Merchant Navy. You can go for any of the following courses depending on your eligibility criteria and conditions.

Diploma in Nautical Science

Diploma in Nautical Science is a one-year pre-sea Course that you can join to get onboard as a Deck Cadet. To get into Diploma in Nautical Science, you need to appear for IMU CET and then for Sponsorship Test conducted by different shipping companies. 

Course Diploma in Nautical Science

Eligibility

  • PCM% Should be greater than 60% (70% for AEMA)
  • English Percentage should be more than 50% either in 10th or 12th. 

Duration

Duration for Diploma in Nautical Science 1-Year.

Average Fee

₹4,00,000 to ₹8,00,000 for one year DNS.

B.Sc in Nautical Science

B.Sc in Nautical Science is a 3-year graduation program in which a student learns all about Seamanship and Nautical Science, from navigation to safety procedure and many other shipping-related subjects. In B.Sc Shipping Companies select students through placement instead of sponsorship. 

Course B.Sc in Nautical Science

Eligibility

  • PCM% Should be greater than 60% 
  • English Percentage should be more than 50% either in 10th or 12th. 

Duration

Duration for B.Sc in Nautical Science is 1 year.

₹2,25,000 to ₹ 10,00,000 for 3 years of B.Sc in Nautical Science.

B.Tech Marine Engineering

B.Tech Marine Engineering is a 4-year graduation course that a student can take to become a trainee marine engineer onboard a ship. Just like any other undergraduate course, students have to go through a placement drive to get placement in a Shipping company. To get admission to B.Tech Marine Engineering, you need to appear for IMU CET and then apply to various maritime colleges.

Course  B.tech Marine Engineering

Eligibility

  • PCM% Should be greater than 60% 
  • English Percentage should be more than 50% either in 10th or 12th. 
  • Candidates with a 3-year Diploma in a related field can get lateral entry. 

Duration

B.Tech Marine Engineering is a 4-year Course.

₹9,00,000 to ₹19,00,000 for 4 years of B.Tech Marine Engineering.

GP Rating

GP Rating is a 6-month diploma course for the rating position on-board Ship that anyone can go for after passing out 10th or 12th. Even students with commerce as a subject in 12th can go for the course. To get into maritime colleges, there is not any common entrance test like IMU CET. However, students need to appear for the entrance exam and interview at different companies and colleges. 

Course  GP Rating Course

Eligibility

  • English should have more than 40% either in 10th or 12th.
  • In the 10th aggregate percentage should be greater than 40%.

OR

  • In 12th, the aggregate percentage should be greater than 40% in any stream. 

OR

  • Pass 2-year ITI with more than 40% in the final year. 

Duration

GP Rating is 6 months course.

₹1,,50,000 to ₹4,50,000 for GP Rating Course.

2. Merchant Navy Courses After Graduation

Even if you've finished your graduation, you can still pursue courses for a career in the Merchant Navy. If you have a degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, you can opt for an ETO Course to become an Electrical Officer or a Graduate Marine Engineering course to become a Trainee Marine Engineer in the Merchant Navy.

Graduate Marine Engineering

Graduate Marine Engineering is a 1-Year Residential Course where you will learn everything about ship engines and machinery on-board. You need to have a Mechanical Engineering Certificate and sponsorship letter before applying to any college for the course.

Eligibility

  • Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical engineering or Naval Architecture with a minimum score of 55% in aggregate.
  • Candidate should have scored at least 50% in English either in 10th or 12th.

Should not be greater than 28 years. 

Electro-Technical Officer

ETO is a post-graduate course that you can pursue if you have done your graduation from Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or any other relevant streams. ETO course allows you to become a Trainee Electrical Officer in the Merchant Navy who is responsible for all the electrical systems on board.
