What is Graduate Marine Engineering (GME) ?

Graduate Marine Engineering(GME) is a one-year Diploma program that allows students of mechanical engineering to delve into the world of shipping. This program educates the students about the ships and different kinds of machinery onboard with their functions.

Graduates from GME programs undergo comprehensive training to acquire the skills and knowledge required to work on ships and contribute to the maritime industry. Some colleges that offer this program directly work under the DG Shipping of India which makes the complete process of selection and admission easy and seamless. 

After passing out from a maritime college, a candidate can work as a junior engineer and later as a 4th Engineer after appearing for MEO Class IV Exams.

GME Eligibility Criteria

The fundamental admission policies are given by the Director General of Shipping upon which maritime institutes can set their criteria for admission of Graduate Marine Engineering (GME) aspirants. The following set of points will sum up the admission criteria of most of the GME (Graduate Marine Engineering) Institutes –

Age Restriction

 The age of the Candidate must not be more than 28 years on the day of the start of training.

Education Qualification

Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical engineering or Naval Architecture with a minimum score of 55% in aggregate.

 English Proficiency

A minimum score of 50% in the subject of English in their 10+2 examination is compulsory to get admission to a Graduate Marine Engineering (GME) college.

Medical Assessment

A minimum of 6/12 vision or 6/9 in the better eye and 6/18 in the worst eye and perfect hearing is necessary without any defects such as night blindness and color blindness. Medical parameters for selection are set by the Director General Shipping.

Admission Process of GME

Now you know, what you need to do after Mechanical Engineer but how to do it is the main concern of this paragraph. We will look more closely into the admission procedure for GME.

Step 1 :
Written Examination

  • You need to clear the minimum eligible marks required to apply for GME i.e. 55% in the final year of Mechanical Engineering or Naval Architecture to apply for the GME in various colleges. 
  • After applying you will be called to attend the written examination which is usually a computer-based test. 
  • Once you clear the written test you will be moved to the second stage which is Interview.

Step 2 :
Panel Interview

  • After clearing the written examination you will be called for the panel interview. 
  • In the Interview you will be assessed on your Communication Skills, your way of talking, and your knowledge. 
  • If the interviewer finds you suitable then you will be asked to go for the Medical to the DG Certified Doctor. 

Step 3 :
Medical Examination

  • This is one of the most crucial stages of this whole selection procedure for GME, if you can’t pass the Medicals then you can say goodbye to your sailing dreams. 
  • There are various kinds of tests in the medical examination from your ultrasound to audiometry test. 
  • Most important of them all is the eyesight test where your vision and color blindness will be checked.

Step 4 :
Provision Letter

  • Once you have gone through this tedious process and cleared every one of them you will be provided with an admission or provision letter by the college or company. 
  • That provision letter will be the key to all your dreams.

How to Apply Graduate Marine Engineering Form

Step 1 :
Apply for Entrance Exam

The first and foremost step is to submit the application form to the college portal where you want to take admission. This is one of the most important steps as your application can be rejected if found incorrect   

Step 2 :
Make your Payment

After filling in the details, you need to make a payment fee for the application form for which you will get a link in the mail with the instructions for payment and the related procedure.

Step 3 :
Seat Booking Process

The last and final step is seat booking which you need to do. Some colleges will allot you the seat and center automatically but in some colleges, you can select your examination center and date from a few options available.

  3. For Diploma candidates with lateral entry to 2nd year of B.Tech, need to have scored 65% and above in the Diploma followed by the Degree eligibility criteria.
  4. In English, a person should not have obtained less than 50% marks either in 10th or 12th.

  • The maximum age should not exceed 28 years on the date of commencement of the course

  • Physically fit and should meet the medical requirements as specified by DGS guidelines, eyesight 6/12 in each eye without visual aids, and no color blindness.

  • Candidate must have good health and be fit for sea service as per existing DG Shipping rules applicable to seafarers with eye-sight  6/12 in each eye 6/9 in the better eye & 6/18 in the other eye. Corrective lenses are permitted. No color-blindness

Graduate Marine Engineering FAQ

On average institutions charge 5 lakhs to 6 lakhs rupees for the total GME (Graduate Marine Engineering) course.

The criteria may differ from institute to institute but the baseline is that candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Naval architecture with a minimum of 50% in the final year.

The admission procedure includes 3 stages: an online entrance exam, a panel interview, and a Medical and optical test.
