How to Use a Vernier Caliper

Vernier calipers and micrometers are two commonly used tools for precision measurement which we use onboard ships for various purposes; both measure dimensions accurately but differ in range and precision.

Vernier Caliper

  1. Clean the jaws and the part to remove dust, oil and burrs.
  2. Close the jaws and check zero: if the vernier zero doesn’t align with the main scale zero, note the error and correct later.
  3. Measure using the outside jaws for external sizes, inside jaws for holes, depth rod for depths.
  4. Tighten the lock screw to hold the reading.
  5. Read the main scale just before the vernier zero, find the vernier division that lines up exactly, multiply that division by the least count and add to the main scale reading.

Formula: Measurement = Main scale + (Vernier reading × Least count)

What is a Micrometer?

Micrometer

A screw‑type gauge for precise measurement of small diameters and thicknesses. Typical accuracy: about 0.01 mm (digital models can be finer).

How to Use a Micrometer

  1. Clean the measuring faces.
  2. Close the spindle with the ratchet and check zero; note any zero error.
  3. Place the part between anvil and spindle.
  4. Turn the ratchet until it clicks 2–3 times to apply consistent pressure.
  5. Lock the spindle if needed to hold the reading.
  6. Read the sleeve value, then the thimble division that aligns with the reference line. Multiply the thimble reading by the least count and add to the sleeve reading.

Formula: Measurement = Sleeve reading + (Thimble reading × Least count)
