One option for diploma holders who wish to pursue a career in the Merchant Navy is B.Tech lateral entry. This program is available to students who have completed a diploma in Marine/ Mechanical / Electrical / Electrical & Electronics engineering engineering and wish to pursue a B.Tech degree.

If you have completed a three-year diploma after your 10th standard, you can enroll in B.Tech lateral entry, which is typically a three-year program.

For example, if you have completed a diploma in mechanical engineering after your 10th standard, you will do a 3-year course and after that, you can apply for lateral entry in B.Tech. The lateral entry option is available in all engineering colleges, and it allows students to directly enroll in the second year of a B.Tech program.

Another way for diploma holders to join the merchant navy is through B.Tech lateral entry in Mechanical Engineering. This means that instead of entering a Marine Engineering program directly, candidates can opt to complete a B.Tech program in Mechanical Engineering first and then pursue a Graduate Marine Engineering Course (GME).

To be eligible for this program, one must have completed a three-year diploma in mechanical engineering and must have obtained a minimum of 60% marks in the final year of the diploma program. This program does not require the IMUCET exam, unlike the B.Tech lateral entry in the Marine Engineering program.

To apply for this program, candidates must first apply to colleges that offer B.Tech lateral entry in Mechanical Engineering. Many colleges across India offer this program, and candidates can choose a college based on their location, faculty, and infrastructure.

Once a candidate has completed their B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering, they can then opt for a GME program. The GME program is a one-year course that covers various aspects of marine engineering, including ship construction, marine propulsion, and ship operations. The course aims to equip candidates with the essential knowledge and skills to perform the duties of marine engineers on ships.

To be eligible for the GME program, candidates must have completed their B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized university with a minimum of 60% marks. They must also meet certain medical and physical fitness criteria, as per the guidelines of the Directorate General of Shipping.
