How to join Merchant Navy after a Diploma
If you have completed a diploma in Marine/ Mechanical / Electrical / Electrical & Electronics engineering and are interested in joining the Merchant Navy, you may be wondering what your options are. In this blog post, we’ll discuss how to join the Merchant Navy after a diploma, including the necessary qualifications and the steps you need to take to achieve your goals.
B.Tech Lateral Entry: Who is Eligible?
One option for diploma holders who wish to pursue a career in the Merchant Navy is B.Tech lateral entry. This program is available to students who have completed a diploma in Marine/ Mechanical / Electrical / Electrical & Electronics engineering engineering and wish to pursue a B.Tech degree.
If you have completed a three-year diploma after your 10th standard, you can enroll in B.Tech lateral entry, which is typically a three-year program.
For example, if you have completed a diploma in mechanical engineering after your 10th standard, you will do a 3-year course and after that, you can apply for lateral entry in B.Tech. The lateral entry option is available in all engineering colleges, and it allows students to directly enroll in the second year of a B.Tech program.
B.Tech Lateral Entry for Marine Engineering
If you are interested in pursuing a career in marine engineering, you can enrol in a B.Tech lateral entry program. We suggest only 5 colleges for Btech Marine engineering which are The Marine Engineering and Research Institute (MERI) in Kolkata, and the Tolani Maritime Institute in Pune, The Marine Engineering and Research Institute (MERI) in Mumbai, IMI Noida with MSC Sponsorship and AMET Chennai with Maersk Sponsorship.
To be eligible for admission to these programs, you must first pass the Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test (IMUCET). It’s worth noting that the Directorate General of Shipping has recently updated its curriculum, stating that students who wish to enrol in B.Tech lateral entry programs must still pass the IMUCET exam.
Once you have passed the IMUCET exam, you can apply to either Tolani Maritime Institute or MERI Kolkata, depending on your rank. You will need to take the Tolani Maritime Institute Science Aptitude Test (TMISAT) to be eligible for admission to Tolani Maritime Institute.
After being admitted to one of these programs, you will need to complete the second, third, and fourth years of the program and participate in campus placement activities.
If you want to know more about IMUCET – Read this blog
Placement Scenario for B.Tech in Marine Engineering
Considering the placement scenario is important if you’re interested in pursuing a B.Tech in Marine Engineering, as the job market has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic but is slowly recovering.
However, it’s worth noting that the placement scenario for B.Tech in Marine Engineering is not as good as other engineering disciplines.
If you are considering this option, it’s important to research the job market and understand what opportunities are available.
We suggest only 5 colleges for Btech Marine engineering which have good placement records and they are The Marine Engineering and Research Institute (MERI) in Kolkata, and the Tolani Maritime Institute in Pune, The Marine Engineering and Research Institute (MERI) in Mumbai, IMI Noida with MSC Sponsorship and AMET Chennai with Maersk Sponsorship.
Graduate Marine Engineering Course
Another way for diploma holders to join the merchant navy is through B.Tech lateral entry in Mechanical Engineering. This means that instead of entering a Marine Engineering program directly, candidates can opt to complete a B.Tech program in Mechanical Engineering first and then pursue a Graduate Marine Engineering Course (GME).
To be eligible for this program, one must have completed a three-year diploma in mechanical engineering and must have obtained a minimum of 60% marks in the final year of the diploma program. This program does not require the IMUCET exam, unlike the B.Tech lateral entry in the Marine Engineering program.
To apply for this program, candidates must first apply to colleges that offer B.Tech lateral entry in Mechanical Engineering. Many colleges across India offer this program, and candidates can choose a college based on their location, faculty, and infrastructure.
Once a candidate has completed their B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering, they can then opt for a GME program. The GME program is a one-year course that covers various aspects of marine engineering, including ship construction, marine propulsion, and ship operations. The course aims to equip candidates with the essential knowledge and skills to perform the duties of marine engineers on ships.
To be eligible for the GME program, candidates must have completed their B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized university with a minimum of 60% marks. They must also meet certain medical and physical fitness criteria, as per the guidelines of the Directorate General of Shipping.
Conclusion
To pursue a career in the Merchant Navy after completing a diploma in engineering, you have various options available. Two popular choices are the B.Tech lateral entry programs in marine engineering and mechanical engineering. By following the steps outlined in this blog post, you can enhance your chances of success and achieve your career goals in the Merchant Navy.
