If you’ve worked with fuel oil treatment systems onboard, you’ve probably heard engineers talking about gravity discs, interface positions, and water carryover problems in conventional purifiers.
And that’s exactly where the ALCAP system changed the game.
ALCAP stands for Alfa Laval Clarifier and Purifier System.
ALCAP combines the advantages of both a clarifier and a purifier while eliminating one of the biggest operational challenges of conventional separators, the need for gravity disc selection.
Let’s understand how it actually works onboard and why marine engineers rely on it.
ALCAP stands for Alfa Laval Clarifier and Purifier System.
It is a specially designed centrifugal separator used for purifying fuel oils having a specific gravity of up to 0.991 at 15°C, which is higher than what many conventional purifier systems can effectively handle.
Unlike traditional purifiers, the Alfa Laval Clarifier and Purifier does not use a gravity disc to maintain the oil-water interface.
Instead, it continuously monitors the water content in the discharged oil and automatically removes separated water whenever necessary.
This makes the system safer, more flexible, and easier to operate, especially when dealing with modern heavy fuel oils whose densities can vary significantly.
In a conventional purifier:
As fuel oils became heavier and denser, maintaining the correct interface became increasingly difficult.
Alfa Laval introduced the ALCAP system to solve this problem.
Instead of depending on a gravity disc, the separator uses an electronic monitoring and control system to automatically manage water removal.
The basic separation principle remains the same.
Dirty fuel oil enters the separator bowl and is subjected to high centrifugal force.
Due to density differences:
The purified oil then leaves through the clean oil outlet.
At first glance, the separator behaves very similarly to a clarifier.
However, the difference lies in how water is handled.
One of the most important features of the Alfa Laval Clarifier and Purifier is the use of a Flow Control Disc.
Unlike conventional purifiers:
This simplifies operation significantly and reduces the possibility of human error.
The real intelligence of the ALCAP system comes from its water monitoring arrangement.
A water transducer is installed on the clean oil outlet side.
Its job is simple:
Continuously monitor the water content in the outgoing purified oil.
Under normal operation:
As water accumulation increases, the water layer gradually moves inward.
Eventually, traces of water begin to reach the clean oil discharge area.
The water transducer immediately detects this increase in water content.
When water is detected:
The engineer does not need to manually adjust the interface or change gravity discs.
The system continuously corrects itself.
This automatic control is one of the biggest advantages of ALCAP technology.
The separated water can leave the separator through two methods:
Method 1: Water Drain Valve
The control unit opens the drain valve.
Water flows:
Method 2: During Desludging
Water may also be discharged together with sludge during the regular desludging cycle.
This ensures that both water and solid contaminants are effectively removed from the bowl.
The ALCAP control unit constantly monitors separator performance.
It records:
Based on these inputs, the control unit decides whether:
This intelligent control helps maintain optimum separator efficiency.
Even though ALCAP separators are highly automated, problems can still occur.
Incorrect water detection can result in:
Heavy deposits reduce separation efficiency.
If the valve fails to operate:
Cold fuel oil remains viscous and difficult to separate.
Can reduce bowl capacity and affect performance.
Feature | Conventional Purifier | ALCAP Separator |
Gravity Disc Required | Yes | No |
Water Detection | Manual Interface Control | Automatic Sensor-Based |
High Density Fuel Handling | Limited | Excellent |
Risk of Wrong Disc Selection | High | Eliminated |
Automation Level | Moderate | High |
Oil Loss Risk | Higher | Lower |
The Alfa Laval Clarifier and Purifier represents a major improvement over conventional purifier technology.
By replacing gravity disc-based interface control with automatic water detection and drainage, Alfa Laval created a system that is simpler, smarter, and more reliable for modern marine fuel treatment.
It combines the advantages of a clarifier and a purifier while reducing operational complexity.
For marine engineers, understanding the ALCAP system is not just useful for exams—it is essential knowledge for maintaining fuel quality, protecting machinery, and ensuring efficient engine room operation.
Because in modern ships, clean fuel is not a luxury.
It is a requirement.
