Reynold’s Number: Reynold’s number is a dimensionless quantity that helps us to predict flow patterns in different fluid flow situations whether it is laminar or turbulent by measuring the ratio between inertial and viscous forces.

What is Critical velocity?
Critical velocity It is the speed and direction at which the flow of liquid changes from laminar to turbulent.
What is the flow rate?
The volume of liquid which passes through a specific area per unit of time is called the flow rate.



How is flow measured?
Flow is measured using a device known as a Flow meter.
There are two types of flow meters –
- Turbine flow meter

2. Orifice flow meter

Why is flow rate important on ships?
It is important because the flow rate tells us how much fuel is consumed on a ship by Main Engine and Generators. Fuel consumption is updated by the owner every day along with boiler oil and cylinder oil readings in the main engine.
