SWFS stands for Seafarers’ Welfare Fund Society. Under SWFS, there is a Maternity Benefit Scheme for Indian female seafarers. The official SWFS page says this scheme is only for Indian female seafarers having sea service through an Indian Shipping Company or RPS before 60 months of delivery.

The benefit amount depends on the delivery date. As per SWFS, the benefit is ₹25,000 per delivery, restricted to a maximum of two deliveries. For delivery taking place on or after 27 January 2026, the amount is increased to ₹50,000 per delivery, subject to the scheme rules. This means the same amount may not apply to every case. The 60 months rule is one of the most important rules in this scheme. The official scheme document says financial assistance is granted for delivery on or after 21 August 2014, within an off-article period of 60 months from the last sign-off from ship. In simple words, the delivery should happen within 60 months from the woman seafarer’s last sign-off date. This is why CDC entries and sign-off records are very important.
The delivery date matters for two main reasons. First, the scheme applies to delivery on or after 21 August 2014. Second, the amount changes for delivery on or after 27 January 2026. For eligible deliveries before 27 January 2026, the benefit is ₹25,000. For eligible deliveries on or after 27 January 2026, the benefit is ₹50,000, subject to rules. Families should not assume one amount applies to all cases.
A benefit is useful only if it is claimed on time. The official SWFS page says the claim must be submitted within 2 years of delivery. This deadline should not be ignored. Many families delay paperwork because they are busy with childbirth, recovery, and family responsibilities. But if the claim is delayed beyond the allowed period, the benefit may be missed. Women seafarers should note the delivery date and prepare the claim documents early.
The official scheme document says the application should be submitted in the prescribed form with required documents, including an attested copy of the child’s birth certificate or medical practitioner’s report and the CDC book. The form may also ask for details such as CDC number, vessel details, shipowner or RPS provider details, address, contact number, and bank details. In simple words, keep CDC, birth certificate, bank details, and sea service records ready.
CDC and sign-off records are very important because they help prove the seafarer’s service history and last sign-off date. The 60 months rule is counted from the last sign-off from ship. If CDC entries or service records are unclear, the claim process may become difficult. Women seafarers should keep copies of CDC pages, sign-on and sign-off details, company or RPS details, and other service records safely. Digital copies should also be saved.
The SWFS Maternity Benefit Scheme is not unlimited. Official SWFS information says the benefit is restricted to a maximum of two deliveries for an eligible Indian female seafarer. This means the scheme can support only up to two eligible childbirth cases. Women seafarers should understand this rule clearly before applying. If a person has already claimed for two eligible deliveries, further deliveries may not be covered under this scheme.
Common mistakes include not knowing about the scheme, missing the two-year claim deadline, not checking the 60 months rule, not keeping CDC records ready, and depending only on verbal information.
