Merchant Navy is a profession that many people don’t know about. It deals with transporting goods and commodities in the form of packages, containers, or even in liquid form. Merchant Navy is responsible for transferring almost 90% of the world trade through ships. The Merchant Navy is vital not only for industries like petroleum and natural resources but it is also for common people, as without the Merchant Navy half of the world would freeze and half of it would starve.
Marine Engineering is a really important job in the Merchant Navy, where engineers work on ships. They take care of all the machinery to make sure the ship runs smoothly. Without them, a ship can’t work properly.Â
These engineers do more than just fix things; they also handle high-tech stuff like engines, power systems, and navigation tools. They are like the problem-solvers of the sea, making sure everything is in good shape during the ship journey.
To keep running ships smoothly and without any problems, there are marine engineers who make sure that the ships keep running smoothly. A marine engineer is responsible for maintaining, operating, and repairing the mechanical system on a ship. This includes every kind of machinery on board from propulsion, electricity, water, and lighting systems to air conditioning systems.Â
Marine Engineering scope offers a variety of career-oriented options for the future, from engine designer in the shipping industry to marine engineering in the Merchant Navy. Marine Engineering offers a wide scope for people who like working on ships and fixing things. In this job, you get to make sure all the important parts of a ship, like engines and equipment, are working well. It’s not just about repairs; you also get to use cool technology to improve how ships run. As a marine engineer, you play a key role in keeping everything shipshape and safe during voyages.Â
Anyone who finds ships and fixing things interesting could consider becoming a marine engineer. It doesn’t require any extraordinary skills; just a basic curiosity and a general tolerance for the sea. Whether you possess mediocre fixing abilities or simply have curiosity for the mechanism of machinery, marine engineering is an option for almost everyone until you are hard-working and not a quitter.Â

In the Engine Department, the lowest rank is Trainee Marine Engineer which is a for training onboard. This is the only rank where you can learn as much as possible and ask as many questions as you want, no one will tell you to stop asking doubts. Hence, in this position, your main focus should be on learning skills and not on salary, but still to give you an idea we will discuss the salary.

2nd Engineer is the top second rank in the Engine Department just like Chief Officer in Deck Department. They are responsible for cargo-related machinery and systems – for example, ballast water treatment systems, ballast system valves, and pumps, cranes or gantries, auxiliary engines, etc. So, the second Engineer has a lot to do but is the same as salary.Â

The Chief Engineer is the topmost rank in the Engine Department. He is responsible for all the engine-related tasks and the proper working of machinery. To get into Marine Engineering, you must clear the necessary examinations with more than 60% in Class 12th.
If you are a person who is interested in solving problems and curious about the workings and mechanisms of machinery then marine engineering is for you.
Marine Engineers get almost equal if not more than officers in the Merchant Navy. The salary of a marine engineer can get as high as ₹15,00,000 per month after clearing exams and gaining experience.
No doubt, marine engineering is one of the few types of engineering that provides one of the highest salaries compared to other engineering.
If you want to be a Marine Engineer then the average course fees that you require are between ₹8,00,000 to ₹21,00,000 for the whole B.Tech Marine Engineering course depending on the college you are enrolling in.
