Many mariners want to move ashore but do not want to leave the shipping industry completely. Some may not be interested in becoming Technical Superintendents, Crewing Managers, Surveyors, or joining traditional shore-based maritime roles. Instead, they may want a career where they can use their shipping experience in a modern, growing, and technology-driven field. One such career option is the role of a Business Analyst, especially in marine tech, shipping software, digital systems, and maritime technology companies.
Introduction
A Business Analyst role can be a strong shore career option for deck officers and marine engineers who are interested in technology, software, digital shipping, and the future of the maritime industry. Shipping companies are now building software for vessel performance, planned maintenance systems, voyage optimisation, crewing, port operations, safety management, compliance, and data analysis. Software developers may understand coding, but they may not understand what actually happens onboard. This is where mariners can bring real practical value.
A Business Analyst works as a bridge between the business team and the technology team. In simple words, the Business Analyst understands the real problem, converts it into clear requirements, and helps the technology team build the right solution. For example, if a company wants to build software for vessel performance, the IT team may understand programming and testing, but may not understand shipboard reports, onboard data, vessel operations, or the practical problems faced by ship staff.
One important part of a Business Analyst’s work is preparing clear documents for the technology team. This document is often called a Functional Requirement Document, or FRD. It explains what needs to be built, why it is needed, how the process should work, and what the final product should be able to do. The Business Analyst may also support software testing and check whether the final product is meeting the actual requirement. So, the role is practical and coordination-heavy.
The biggest strength of a mariner is domain knowledge. A normal Business Analyst from outside shipping may understand documentation, software workflows, and project processes, but they may not understand vessel operations. They may not know how a Master, Chief Engineer, Second Officer, Third Officer, Third Engineer, or Fourth Engineer actually works onboard. A mariner understands real shipboard problems, shipowner expectations, ship-management requirements, and ship staff needs. This makes them valuable in marine-tech and shipping software companies.
Business Analyst roles are especially suitable for operational-level officers such as Third Officers, Second Officers, Fourth Engineers, and Third Engineers. These officers can enter as Business Analysts and gradually grow in the technology side of shipping. For senior officers such as Masters and Chief Engineers, entering as a junior Business Analyst may not always be the best move. They usually bring leadership experience, decision-making ability, and deeper operational understanding, so they should target higher-level roles from the beginning.
Senior mariners can aim for roles such as Senior Business Analyst, Project Manager, Product Manager, or Program Manager. A senior mariner can add value by managing larger projects, guiding teams, reviewing product direction, and helping companies build solutions that truly match industry needs. Their leadership experience and practical understanding of vessel operations can be used better in roles where they can influence product strategy, project execution, user experience, and operational decision-making inside marine-tech or digital shipping companies.

For mariners who understand shipping problems deeply, this field can also open the door to entrepreneurship. If you clearly understand what problems the maritime industry is facing, you may later build your own software, app, digital platform, or marine-tech product. This makes business analysis not only a job option, but also a path toward innovation.
Salary in Business Analyst roles depends on experience, company, role, location, skill level, and how strongly the candidate combines shipping knowledge with technology understanding. A mariner entering as a Business Analyst may start at around ₹12 lakh to ₹15 lakh per annum. This can be higher than a normal Business Analyst from outside the industry because the mariner brings shipping domain knowledge. Marine-tech companies value people who can explain real shipboard problems and convert them into software requirements.
With experience, salary can grow strongly. A Project Manager may earn around ₹35 lakh to ₹40 lakh per annum, depending on company, responsibility, and project size. A Program Manager or Product Manager can earn even more, especially if the person is handling multiple projects, leading teams, or working in a fast-growing marine-tech company. This field can offer good long-term growth for people who are strong in communication, documentation, problem-solving, process understanding, and technology awareness.
An MBA is not compulsory to become a Business Analyst. Many companies may hire mariners because they understand shipping, communicate clearly, write proper requirements, and explain shipboard processes to technology teams. However, a good MBA from a strong institute can help in long-term growth, especially for product management, strategy, leadership, or business roles. After doing an expensive full-time MBA, the target should not be only a basic Business Analyst role, but higher roles in product, project, or strategy.
A good Business Analyst must have strong communication and writing skills. This role involves preparing documents, explaining requirements, attending meetings, coordinating with developers, speaking with business teams, and testing whether the product is working correctly. Attention to detail is very important. For example, if you are explaining a login system, you cannot simply write that the user should log in. You must explain wrong password flow, password reset, user messages, page behaviour, and every important step clearly.

You do not need to become a software developer, but you should understand how software is built. You should know how a requirement moves from idea to design, development, testing, feedback, and final release. This helps you communicate better with developers, testers, designers, managers, and business teams.
Mariners interested in Business Analyst roles should start with practical and relevant upskilling. They can learn business analysis, Agile methodology, Scrum basics, software development lifecycle, project management, product management basics, documentation skills, and basic software testing concepts. Courses on platforms such as Udemy, Coursera, and similar learning websites can help build a foundation. These courses also help mariners understand the language used by technology teams, which is important when shifting from shipboard operations to marine tech.
PMP certification or project-management training can be useful, especially for senior officers who want to move into project management, program management, or leadership roles. However, the goal should not be to collect certificates blindly. The real goal is to build skills that make you useful in a technology-driven maritime company. A senior officer should learn how to manage timelines, stakeholders, product goals, team communication, risk, testing feedback, and delivery expectations in a structured way.
Mariners should target marine-tech companies, shipping software companies, IT companies working with shipping clients, ship-management companies with digital teams, vessel performance companies, maritime data companies, port technology firms, logistics technology companies, and digital transformation teams in shipping organisations. The CV should not look like only a sailing CV. It should show shipping experience along with technology interest, documentation ability, communication skills, problem-solving exposure, reporting knowledge, relevant courses, and interest in digital transformation or marine-tech work.
A strong LinkedIn profile is important because many marine-tech and IT recruiters search for suitable candidates there. Your profile should clearly show that you understand shipping operations and are serious about moving into a Business Analyst or marine-tech role. Your “why” should also be clear. Companies should feel that you are not just looking for any shore job, but genuinely want to work at the intersection of shipping, technology, and practical problem-solving.
