Tank sounding is a routine measurement carried out on board ships to determine the quantity or level of liquid contained in a tank. It is an integral part of shipboard operations as tanks may contain fuel oil, diesel oil, lubricating oil, fresh water, ballast water or other liquids.
Accurate tank measurement enables the ship’s crew to monitor levels of consumption, ensure correct trim and stability, manage fuel and water supplies and prevent spillage or shortage. Depending on the tank arrangement and fitted equipment, the level can be determined by sounding, ullage measurement or an electronic level gauging system.
Sounding refers to measuring the depth of liquid from a fixed reference point at the top of a tank. Traditionally, this is done using a sounding tape or sounding rod lowered through a sounding pipe until it reaches the liquid surface.
The measured depth is then compared with the tank’s calibration or capacity table to determine the approximate quantity of liquid inside.
A typical manual sounding arrangement consists of:
The sounding pipe provides a safe and defined route for the sounding equipment to reach the tank.
Tank sounding is performed for different types of tanks throughout the vessel. The procedure and equipment can vary depending on the tank and its contents.
Commonly sounded tanks include:
During manual sounding, the crew normally lowers the sounding tape through the sounding pipe until the weight reaches the liquid surface. The wet mark or liquid contact on the tape indicates the sounding.
The reading is recorded and may then be converted into volume using the tank’s calibration table.
A basic manual sounding procedure involves:
Safety precautions are particularly important when sounding fuel or other hazardous tanks.
Ullage is the empty space between the surface of the liquid and a fixed reference point at the top of a tank. Unlike sounding, which measures the depth of liquid or the distance to the liquid surface from a reference arrangement, ullage measures the space above the liquid.
For example, if a tank has a fixed reference height of 10 metres and the measured ullage is 3 metres, the liquid level corresponds to approximately 7 metres from the reference level, subject to the tank’s geometry and calibration data.
Ullage is commonly used for measuring fuel and cargo tanks, especially where accurate volume calculations are required.
Both sounding and ullage provide information about the liquid level inside a tank, but they are measured differently.
Sounding
Ullage
The relationship can be expressed simply as:
Reference Height = Sounding + Ullage
However, actual shipboard calculations must use the tank’s approved calibration tables because tank geometry, trim and list can affect the relationship between level and volume.
Ullage can be measured manually using an ullage tape or by using an electronic level-gauging system.
Modern ships may be fitted with:
These systems can provide continuous or periodic information about tank levels from a central monitoring station.
Electronic systems reduce the need for frequent manual measurements but manual sounding may still be used for verification and as a backup method.
Regular tank sounding is important for both operational and safety reasons.
It helps the crew to:
For fuel tanks, regular measurements can also help the engineering team compare actual fuel consumption with expected consumption and identify unusual changes.
Tank sounding should always be carried out according to the vessel’s safety procedures.
Important precautions include:
Tank sounding is a simple but vital measurement on board. It determines the quantity of liquid in the tank. Sounding and ullage provide two different means of obtaining information about the quantity of liquids in a tank while the modern practice of electronic tank gauging offers a continuous monitoring of the content of the tanks. Correct sounding ensures efficient use of fuel and water as well as the even distribution of ballast and water in the ship’s tanks and proper operation of the vessel.
Tank sounding is the measurement used to determine the liquid level or corresponding quantity inside a ship’s tank.
Sounding measures the liquid level using the designated tank reference arrangement, while ullage measures the empty space between the liquid surface and a fixed reference point at the top of the tank.
A sounding tape or sounding rod with a suitable weight is commonly used for manual tank measurement.
It helps monitor fuel, water and ballast quantities, supports stability and trim management, prevents overfilling and helps maintain accurate tank records.
Ullage is the distance or empty space between the liquid surface and the tank’s fixed reference point at the top.
Yes. Modern ships may use radar, hydrostatic, float type or other electronic level gauging systems to monitor tank levels.
The measured reading is normally compared with the tank’s approved calibration table. Corrections may be required for factors such as trim and list.
