Working Principle

The refrigeration system operates on the basic vapour compression refrigeration cycle.

  1. The compressor compresses the refrigerant and raises its pressure and temperature.
  2. The refrigerant passes through the condenser, where heat is rejected to the surroundings.
  3. The refrigerant passes through an expansion device where its pressure and temperature decrease.
  4. The cold refrigerant enters the evaporator and absorbs heat from the air inside the container.
  5. The cooled air is circulated through the T bar floor and around the cargo.
  6. The warmer return air comes back to the refrigeration unit where the cycle is repeated.

The system is mainly intended to maintain the required cargo temperature. Therefore, cargo should normally be pre cooled to the required transport temperature before loading.

Since refrigeration must continue throughout the voyage, reliable electrical power is essential. Reefer containers are connected to dedicated electrical outlets, commonly called reefer points, provided on the vessel.
