A seafarer’s life does not end with the last sign-off. Many Indian seafarers spend years at sea, away from family, working through long contracts, night watches, port pressure, engine-room heat, and rough weather. But after retirement, many senior seafarers and their families do not know that old age welfare support may be available through SWFS. This is why every retired Indian seafarer should understand the SWFS Old Age Benefits clearly.

SWFS stands for Seafarers’ Welfare Fund Society. It is a welfare body for Indian seafarers and their families. DGMA says SWFS is an autonomous society under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Government of India, and it was established in 1964 for the welfare of Indian seafarers and their families. The Old Age Benefit Scheme is one of the welfare schemes meant to support eligible senior Indian seafarers.

Many seafarers focus on CDC, contracts, salary, courses, joining dates, and sign-off. But welfare benefits after retirement are also important. A retired seafarer may face medical expenses, reduced income, family dependency, and old age financial pressure. This scheme may not replace a pension or lifelong income, but it gives one-time financial support and recognition for years of sea service. Retired ratings, officers, and families should know about this scheme before the deadline is missed.
Under the Old Age Benefit Scheme, eligible Indian seafarers holding an Indian CDC may receive ₹50,000 one-time financial assistance after completing 65 years of age on or after 1 January 2019. The 2026 DG Shipping/SWFS reference states that this assistance is payable to seafarers holding Indian CDC on completion of 65 years of age on or after 01.01.2019. This benefit is subject to eligibility, documents, and timely application.
A separate old age support has also been introduced for eligible Indian seafarers who attain the age of 75 years on or after 1 January 2026. Under this provision, ₹1,00,000 one-time assistance is payable to eligible Indian seafarers holding Indian CDC. The same reference also says the benefit applies to seafarers who have performed at least six months of sea service after attaining 50 years of age through an Indian Shipping Company or RPSL.
This benefit is for eligible Indian seafarers who meet the age, Indian CDC, sea service, and application conditions. The old application form says the scheme applies to Indian seafarers holding Indian CDC who completed 65 years on or after 1 January 2019. The updated 2026 reference further explains the sea service requirement and the separate age 75 benefit. Before applying, retired seafarers should always verify the latest SWFS form and rules.
Sea service is an important eligibility condition. Earlier, the old form mentioned cumulative six months of sea service after 1 April 2014 and after the age of 55 years. The 2026 update says the sea service condition for the 65-year benefit has been rationalised from six months after age 55 to six months after attaining the age of 50 years through an Indian Shipping Company or RPSL. This update is important for retired seafarers.
Indian CDC is very important in this scheme. The benefit is connected with Indian seafarers holding Indian CDC. The 2026 reference also mentions that Indian CDC must be cancelled for the age 65 benefit. This means the CDC is not just an old document. It is proof of seafaring identity and service history. Retired seafarers should keep their CDC safely and check the latest CDC cancellation requirement before applying.
The claim deadline is very important. For the age 65 benefit, the 2026 reference states that applications must be submitted within 12 months from attaining the age of 65 years. For the age 75 benefit, applications must be submitted within 12 months from attaining the age of 75 years. If a seafarer or family delays too much, the claim may become difficult. Do not wait until the last moment.
The old SWFS application form asks for details such as the seafarer’s name as per CDC, CDC number, date of birth, last vessel sign-off details, Indian shipowner or RPS provider details, address, phone number, email, and bank details. It also asks for the original latest CDC book and bank proof such as passbook front page or cancelled cheque. Retired seafarers should keep these documents arranged before applying.
Many retired seafarers may know their documents, but their families may not. This can create problems if the seafarer is old, unwell, or unable to manage paperwork. Family members should know where the CDC, bank details, sea service records, and SWFS application information are kept. Old age benefits are useful only when the family knows they exist and applies within the correct timeline. Welfare awareness should not remain only with the seafarer.
Common mistakes include missing the 12-month deadline, not keeping CDC records properly, not checking the latest eligibility rules, not having bank details ready, and depending only on verbal information. Another mistake is assuming that old age benefit is automatic. It is not automatic. The eligible seafarer must apply in the prescribed form with required documents. Always check official SWFS or DG Shipping sources before applying.
SWFS Old Age Benefits for Indian Seafarers can provide important one-time support after years of sea service. Eligible seafarers may receive ₹50,000 at age 65 and ₹1,00,000 at age 75, subject to official rules, Indian CDC, sea service requirement, documents, and claim deadline. The main lesson is simple: do not wait until after the birthday milestone to start checking. Keep documents ready, inform your family, and verify the latest SWFS process in time.
