Temperature Transmitter Working Principle

A temperature transmitter is an important instrument used in industrial and marine systems to measure temperature and convert it into a standardized electrical signal. This signal is then transmitted to monitoring, control, or automation systems for further operation. Working Principle of Temperature Transmitter

First, a temperature sensing element such as an RTD (Resistance Temperature Detector) or thermocouple detects the temperature of the process fluid or machinery surface.

RTD-Based Temperature Transmitter

In an RTD, the electrical resistance of the sensing element changes with temperature. As temperature increases, resistance also increases. The transmitter measures this resistance variation and converts it into a proportional electrical signal.

4. Working of Sewage Treatment Plant

In a thermocouple, two dissimilar metals joined together generate a small voltage when exposed to temperature changes. The transmitter measures this voltage and converts it into a standardized output signal.


The temperature transmitter then processes the sensor signal using electronic circuitry and converts it into a standard output, usually:

  • 4–20 mA current signal
  • 0–10 V voltage signal

This output signal is transmitted to:

  • Control panels
  • PLC systems
  • Engine monitoring systems
  • Alarm systems
  • Automation systems

For example:

  • 4 mA may represent minimum temperature
  • 20 mA may represent maximum temperature

This allows accurate remote monitoring of temperature conditions onboard ships.

Main Components of a Temperature Transmitter

A temperature transmitter mainly consists of:

  1. Temperature Sensor: It detects the actual temperature. Common sensors include:
  • RTD
  • Thermocouple
  1. Signal Converter: Converts sensor output into standardized electrical signals.
  2. Electronic Circuit: Processes and amplifies the signal for accurate transmission.
  3. Output Section: Sends the final output signal to monitoring or control systems.

  • Cleaning sensor surfaces

  • Inspecting for corrosion or moisture damage
  • Verifying output signal accuracy
